The Salt Lake City library is located in the west of the United States of America, in the capital of the Utah state. This building was one of the three finalists in a national design contest and it has redefined the concept of a library because it provides to the visitor a space to walk and enjoy the architecture of the building, the library also invite them to the top floor and watch a grand view of the whole city, also in the main square, every now and then, cultural and entertainment events take place. The library has approximately five flours and the inner design gives to the user the need to walk its halls. The structure includes concrete and glass. One of its features is the five-story curved glass wall; another interesting thing is that the whole library depends on natural lighting, reducing the need of lights in the library (Wikipedia).
About the horizontal circulation, there are big hallways that allow a good trip through the library, there are wide hallways where the user can tour the library and there are the outermost hallways which allow a panoramic view of the landscape that the city offers. The main entry hall, besides his extension, has a great height that hierarchies it as the main one in the enclosure, because through it the people can access to the other levels, and finally the inner corridors, located in the areas where the shelves are, that allows the circulation to access of all the material that is located in the consultation rooms. The access to the building from outside areas is defined by the path surrounded by the gardens, it provides a friendly environment to the visitors and it also is defined by big spaces like the main square, where the shops are and these offers many services. In many of the study areas, that have fireplaces, there are balconies where the user can enjoy of the warmth and the natural lighting; the user also can appreciate the different areas of the city from there.
The vertical circulation is defined by the stairs located in diverse areas of the library and the elevators, both of them allow the access to the different levels of the building, and these stairs have a design to do not break the inner design of the space and work as a communication element between the floors of the library too. Outside, the building's design allows visitors to have a vision of what they will find inside because from one of the square sides begins a kind of inclined wall that starts in the ground, with a slight inclination that increases its height until reach the edge of the library. In this building the vertical circulation is on the background, because it gives greater emphasis to the spaces that define the horizontal movement.
This library, despite being a recent building on those found around, is a very welcoming structure that allows, in addition to the activity for which a library is intended, a moment of enjoyment and relaxation either walking by it or enjoying a coffee in the main square or in the study areas, where the drink access is permitted. In addition to an architectural landmark is a tourist landmark in the city because the library is visited annually by large numbers of tourists that are attracted by what they could find in the library, because this is a structure that breaks all the concepts they have in their minds about what a library is indeed.
